Artist Statement:

When one thinks of Fiber Art/ Rug
Hooking what comes to mind is
“Women’s Work.”  Rooted in
feminism, all the pieces I am
currently creating, look at women
and the issues and events that
challenge their lives.  In this
“women's series,” you will always
find a woman, and a word, phrase,
or symbol that will express my
feelings about a particular
experience. Having words and
symbols in my pieces is symbolic
of my desire for women to always
have their own voice.  What each
piece decides to “say” and at what
point in my life, is part of the
creative process that never ceases
to amaze me.  This place, of being
“in the flow” and letting the
creative process take over, is a
place of true bliss.  As an artist, I
look at each piece that I create, as
a segment of my thought process,
at any given point in time.

Coughlin
I also noticed early on, that I started to add other elements to my hooked
pieces, such as ribbon, buttons, yarn and felting so that each piece would
have to be hung on the wall and not placed on the floor and “walked on”
as rugs traditionally are.

My art is about capturing my intuitive guidance and having the strength to
follow its direction, wherever it may lead, even when society may not feel
comfortable with some of the issues I raise. Being in touch with the energy
that flows around us all, it is my intent that when my art is viewed it will
elicit an emotional response in the viewer
